There are loads of these ‘smart-bulbs’ on the market today: they are lightbulbs which have wireless technology built in to them, connecting them to an app or internet based portal so you can control your lighting from your smartphone, tablet, laptop or computer. They go one step further than this too – depending on which model you choose there is the option to change the colour of the bulb and to adjust dimming settings.

You can create a timing schedule much the same as we do for heating, so you will never come home to a dark house or go on holiday and wonder if you left the lights on – you can control it from wherever you are using the app!

This Philips Hue Starter Kit is a good starting point if you are new to wireless domestic technology, and it has an easy setup. It is available here at a starting price of £59.99.

If you already have Hive in your home, they have lightbulbs available that will fit seamlessly into your existing Hive app – get it here.

Drones have been on the tech scene for a while now, so this isn’t anything new. However, they aren’t just being used as toys or racing vehicles anymore, but for serious filming and photography.

Different models offer varying options for camera use: some come with built-in cameras and others have an area to mount a GoPro.

GoPro are newcomers onto the drone scene, launching their own vehicle ‘Karma’, available with or without GoPro HERO4/HERO5. It includes Karma Grip which helps you capture shake-free footage; whether it’s chasing after your kids or capturing extreme sports, always giving a professional quality video.

The drone folds down into a lightweight travel case, so you can capture on-the-go footage whenever you want, and has a real-time app that lets your friends view your flight and control your GoPro while you fly.

The Karma will be available at the beginning of 2017 from £719.99, in the meantime learn more about them here.

If you can’t wait, or if your budget doesn’t stretch that far, you can get your hands on a cheaper model by Syma from £41.51 here. It doesn’t have the easy to use controller like the GoPro one, but it does have an in-built HD camera so it should satisfy those with the need for some basic drone-flying-camera action.

Virtual Reality headsets are this seasons Big Thing. They range from top of the range headsets that include separate hand controls, giving you full-body integration into whatever virtual world you are playing, to cardboard masks that your phone mounts into. The full VR experience is achieved when using the high-end headsets, such as the Oculus Rift + Touch model.

Just pop the headset on and become fully immersed into your new 3-D environment. This VR technology is bringing the gaming experience to a whole new level, allowing the player more control over their individual experience.

It creates the 3-D environment using 2 sensors that scan the room you have set it up in and then you map your play area using the Touch controllers. Buy the bundle here for £738.99.

“Virtual reality: Fooling your senses into seeing something that’s not there. Making the unreal real.”

Here is some really useful smart technology to bring into your home, protecting you and your loved ones. Nest is a dual smoke and carbon monoxide alarm connected wirelessly to your phone or tablet. The device has heat, CO and smoke sensors and sends you an alert if it thinks something is wrong, so even if you aren’t home you can feel safe knowing your home is protected.

It’s smarter than our annoying smoke alarms we are used to using now; if you accidentally leave the toaster on for too long it will give you an early warning before the alarm, and when you know everything is ok you can silence it from your phone. None of that tea-towel-flapping madness.

If there is a real alarm, the device will tell you where the danger is located so you know what to do. It also has a motion sensor that allows the Nest to act as a night-light when you walk past in the dark.

Carbon monoxide is a very serious silent killer – it is a gas we cannot see or smell and there aren’t many options readily available for monitoring it; the Nest is a great 2 in 1 product that can give us all peace of mind.

They are available here from £99.
